Dù cho những cây Lan Hài nguyên giống được khám phá ra khi nào chăng nữa thì các nhà chuyên môn lai giống cũng tạo ra được những cây lan mới thật hấp dẫn. Hai mươi năm qua, người ta đã tìm ra được những cây lan nguyên giống mới ở Việt-Nam. Câu chuyện về Lan Hài mới được nói nhiều từ năm 1987.

L/H henryanum Braem 1987
Đồng danh: L/H dollii Lueckel 1987)

Khi lai giống cây này người ta hy vọng tạo được cây mới nhỏ gọn, hoa có đốm lớn trên cánh đài và môi hoa có màu đậm.

Trong những năm đầu, chỉ có những cây lai giống tại vườn ương Hilmar Doll ở Đức mới được cho đăng ký như cây lai giống với L/H haynaldianum (còn gọi L/H Tigerdolli 1989) hoặc với L/H liemianum (L/H Limidolli 1989), hoặc với L/H delenatii (L/H Doll Mouse 1990), với L/H rothschildianum (L/H Dolliroth 1992), với L/H charlesworthiii (L/H Doll's Kobold), với L/H lowii (L/H Lipstick 1992).

Lại có nhà lai giống khác cố gắng tạo giống mới vào những năm kế tiếp như Paphanatics đã lai giống cây L/H sukhakulii (L/H Graham Robertson 1992) với cây L/H barbigerum (L/H Tyke 1995). Tổng cộng được 24 cây lai giống chính và 30 cây lai phụ khác với cây cha mẹ hỗn tạp.

Kết quả những cố gắng trong việc lai giống trong những năm qua là tạo ra được những cây mới nhỏ gọn. Một vài loại lai tạo cho chúng ta những hoa có đốm chấm trên hoa như L/H Tyke, L/H Graham Robertson, L/H Doll's Kobold, L/H Wossner Ministar (lai giống với L/H helenae 2001) và có thể L/H Wossner Tigerhenry (lai giống với L/H tigrinum 1998). Trong tương lai, những cây lai giống tốt đẹp, đương nhiên sẽ từ những cây nguyên giống kể trên.

Bên cạnh những cây lai giống nhân tạo, cây L/H henryanum còn có những cây lai giống tự nhiên như L/H x vietenryanum, lai giống với L/H gratrixianum, hay L/H x aspersum, lai giống với L/H barbigerum. Loài lai giống với Phragmipedium longifolium (Phragmipaphilium Charming Daughter 1995) là loài lai giống tự nhiên của L/H longifolium.

L/H tigrinum Koopowitz & Hasegawa 1990
Đồng danh: L/H markianum Fowlie 1990)

Việc lai giống này là nhằm vào mục đích gây được cây có hoa đầy màu sắc và có chấm trên cánh hoa nhưng kết quả thật thất vọng, ngoài ý muốn. Cây lai giống đợt đầu loại này do Ray Rands thực hiện đã ra hoa năm 1994 tại vườn ương Norito Hasegawa và Harold Koopowitz ở Orange county. Cây lai giống với L/H charlesworthii có tên L/H Charlie Tiger. Loài lai giống kế tiếp được Franz Glanz đăng ký tại Đức từ 1995 với cây nguyên giống L/H concolor là L/H Wossner Concotiger. Hoa lai này có màu tốt nhưng hình dáng không đẹp. Tổng cộng được 14 giống tiên khởi và 6 giống lai khác được đăng ký.

L/H x herrmannii Fuchs & Reisinger 1995.

Mục đích của việc lai giống này nhằm vào mục đích có những cây cho nhiều màu và nhỏ gọn. Đây đươc coi như loại lai giống tự nhiên giữa L/H hirsutissimum var. esquirolei và L/H barbigerum hay L/H helenae.

Những cây lai giống nhân tạo cho ta những cây đồng nhất về màu sắc và hình dạng. Vì vậy việc xắp hạng những cây này vào loai nguyên giống riêng biệt thật thích đáng. Những cây này không được trồng nhiều, đôi khi không được chấp nhận đăng ký, nên không có nhiều tin tức về việc lai giống. Chỉ có cây L/H Wössner Minibraun lai giống từ cây L/H schoseri do Franz Glanz đăng ký là được chấp nhận. Một cây khác lai giống với L/H tonsum & braemii cũng cho kết quả tốt đẹp.

L/H helenae Averyanov 1996.

Việc lai giống nhằm muc đích tạo ra được cây có hoa màu thật vàng và nhỏ gọn. Cây lai giống đầu tiên từ L/H sukhakulii ra hoa 1999 tại vườn ương Franz Glanz ở Unterwossen nên được đặt tên L/H Wössner Goldsuk. Cũng tai đây vào các năm 2000 và 2001, những cây lai sau đã nở hoa: L/H Mariechen (từ L/H niveum); L/H Wössner Helene (từ L/H charlesworthii); L/H Wössner Zwerg (từ L/H barbigerum); L/H Wössner Ministar (từ L/H henryanum). Tất cả những cây lai giống này đều mau lớn và mau ra hoa trong những chậu nhỏ, lý tưởng cho để nơi cửa sổ. Tuy nhiên đã không thực hiện nổi một màu chủ yếu nhất định. Người ta chỉ có thể lai giống những loại có hoa vàng để có hoa lai màu vàng đậm kim loại. Ví dụ với L/H armeniacum ta có L/H Wössner Minigold 2003, với L/H Golddollar và L/H primulium ta có L/H Wossner Mini Gold 2004.

Cũng thật lý thú khi lần đầu lai giống với L/H dayanum vinicolor được hoa có màu rượu chát đỏ. Đúng ra là lai giống giữa L/H Orchard Slope với L/H dayanum để có màu lai đậm. Tổng cộng đã được 10 giống lai tiên khởi và 3 giống lai phụ khác được đăng ký.

L/H tranlienianum Gruss & Perner 1998.

Mục đích của lai giống này là nhằm tạo ra những cây mọc ổn định và có hoa màu sặc sỡ. Tác giả Olaf Gruss đã đăng ký hai cây lai giống với cây L/H helenae là L/H Vinci, và lai giống với L/H barbigerum & coccineum là cây L/H René.

Cả hai đều mọc một cách nhỏ gọn và dễ ra hoa. Hoa màu nâu và hình dáng thì giống như L/H barbigerum. Hy vọng trong tương lai cây nguyên giống này sẽ cho những cây lai lùn tiện để nơi cửa sổ.

L/H coccineum Perner và Herrmann 2000

L/H barbigerum & coccineum (Perner và Herrmann) Cavestro.

Cho đến nay mới chỉ có một giống lai với tranlienianum đó là L/H René đăng ký như lai giống barbigerum-cross cho cây khoẻ, dễ ra hoa màu đậm. Có thể đã có những cây lai giống khác đem trồng nhưng không đăng ký vì tên chưa được chấp nhận.

L/H vietnamense Gruss & Perner 1999.

- L/H hilmari Senghas & Schettler 1999
- L/H mirabile W. Cavestro & G. Chiron 1999

Mục đích lai giống này là để có được hoa lớn từ màu hồng đến đỏ, dáng cây tốt, dễ trồng và, dễ ra hoa. Lai giống từ L/H delenatii và do N. Popow, Đức, đăng ký năm 2002, cây lai L/H Ho Chi Minh, mọc mau và cho hoa màu từ hồng đến đỏ và hình dáng tuyệt hảo. Hoa lai giống nở từ 2-4 tuần, nếu khí hậu lạnh sẽ kéo dài thêm từ 1-2 tuần.

Công việc lai giống kế tiếp được thực hiện ở Đức và ở Đài Loan với cây L/H malipoense (như L/H Wössner Butterfly do Franz Glanz 2003), với cây L/H bellatulum (như L/H Wössner Viet Nam Beauty do Franz Glanz 2003), với cây L/H micranthum (như L/H Wössner Vietnam Love do Franz Glanz 2003).

Việc lai giống đầu tiên giữa cây lai với nhau đã ra hoa vào năm 2004 như cây L/H Transvaal (do Handebauer thực hiện tại Áo và do Franz Glanz đăng ký) cho cây L/H Franz Fuchs. Cũng năm đó có lai giống cây L/H Susan Booth tại In-Charm-Nursery ở Đài Loan, và được đăng ký là L/H In-Charm Cotton Candy. Ngoài ra còn có lai giống L/H S. Gratrix, L/H In-Charm-Jewel.

Những lai giống kể trên chứng tỏ màu của cây L/H vietnamense chiếm ưu thế. Một điểm nữa là những cây này dễ trồng và dễ ra hoa. Hấp dẫn nhất là khi lai giống những cây nguyên giống thuộc nhóm Brachypetalum và Parvisepalum như L/H Sakura Pink (từ L/H concolor do Aihara 2004), L/H Wössner Vietnam Bell (từ L/H Conco-bellatulum do Franz Glanz 2004), L/H Wössner Vietnam Gold (từ L/H armenianum do Franz Glanz 2004), L/H Alfred Tetzlaff (từ L/H godefroyae do Pinkepank 2005) và L/H Eddy Wets (từ L/H wenshanense, do René Klinge thực hiện và Olaf Gruss đăng ký).

Phần lớn những cây lai giống này cho ta hoa hình dáng đẹp với những chấm đỏ. Việc lai giống cho chúng ta thấy ưu điểm của giống L/H armeniacum. Hoa của L/H Wössner Vietnam Gold thì màu trắng vàng không có chấm. Lai giống với L/H emersonii (L/H Wossner Vietnam Moon do Franz Glanz 2004) cho hoa lớn nhưng hình dáng thì không phải lúc nào cũng hoàn hảo với trung tâm màu trắng và màu hồng lan tỏa. Cao điểm của việc lai giống là năm 2005 khi vườn ương của Franz Glanz ở Unterwossen có cây lai giống giữa L/H vietnamense với L/H rothschildianum nở hoa. Cây lai này cho hoa đậm đà với hình dáng hoàn hảo, giống như L/H Gloria Naugle nhưng hoa màu sẫm và dáng đẹp hơn.

Thật là lý thú khi thu được kết quả lai giống với cây L/H quý hiếm của Việt-Nam như L/H hangianum. Cuộc lai giống do Handelbauer thực hiện và nở hoa lần đầu vào năm 2005 ở vườn ương Franz Glanz và được đặt tên L/H Annie Fuchs. Hoa cây này màu trắng hồng và có mùi thơm đáng kể. Dáng hoa không đẹp lắm nhưng hy vọng trong tương lai sẽ có những lai giống tuyệt hảo.

Tổng cộng đến nay đã có 20 cây lai giống được đăng ký: 13 lai giống chính và 7 lai giống phụ khác.

Tóm tắt những quan sát cho thấy kết qủa lai giống chưa hoàn toàn đuợc như ý muốn. Trong khi lai giống với những cây nguyên giống trong nhóm Brachypetalum và Parvisepalum thật hấp dẫn thì với những cây lai đa dạng khác lại không hứng thú bằng. Thật sư chúng tôi nhận thấy nhiều ngạc nhiên khi lai giống với L/H vietnamense.

L/H hangianum Perner và Gruss 1999
Đồng danh: L/H singchii Liu và Zhang 2000

Mục đích là lai được giống hoa lớn, màu kem, có hương thơm, dáng đẹp, dễ trồng và nhiều hoa.

Việc lai giống cây đặc hữu này được thực hiện ở Đài-Loan và Đức. Cây lai đầu tiên với giống L/H niveum là L/H Chou-Yi Yuki do Shin-Yi thực hiện và Ching Hua đăng ký 2004. Cây lai cho hoa lớn với cánh hoa màu kem, có chấm nâu đỏ và lưỡi hoa màu trắng. Cây lai giống thứ hai nở hoa ở vườn ương Franz Glanz lai giống từ L/H Conco-bellatulum, đăng ký với tên L/H Wössner Giant. Cây cho hoa màu vàng có chấm đỏ. Ban ngày,cả hai cây lai giống trên đều có mùi thơm.

Một kết quả khác cũng đáng ngạc nhiên khi lai giống L/H delenatii, L/H In-Charm Handel 2005 thực hiện bởi In-Charm Orchids và do Ching-Hua đăng ký. Cây lai này cho hoa lớn màu trắng với hình dáng thật đẹp, có chấm màu hồng và đỏ ở gần cuống.

Lai giống với cây L/H bellatulum cũng được Handebauer thực hiện sau đó cùng năm ở Áo và do Franz Glanz đăng ký với tên L/H Karl Ploberger. Cây lai này cho hoa to, màu kem với chấm nâu đỏ và dáng đẹp.

Việc lai tạo với những cây nguyên giống thuộc nhóm Parvisepalum cũng cho nhìều thích thú. Khi lai giống với cây L/H malipoense (cho cây lai L/H Shun-Fa Golden do Dou-Ya-Orchids thực hiện và Ching Hua đăng ký 2005) ta có hoa màu kem xanh ngọc với nhụy đực (staminode) màu sậm đỏ. Khi pha giống với L/H armeniacum (L/H Wössner China Moon do Franz Glanz đăng ký 2005) chúng ta được cây lai có hoa vàng đậm đẹp lạ thường.

Sự pha giống giữa những cây lai không cho ta những kết quả khích lệ. Chúng ta còn phải đợi đến những lai giống phức tạp để có cây mới cho hoa có dáng đẹp và thơm.

Một kết qủa khích lệ nữa khi lai giống với L/H rothschildianum (L/H Alexej do René Klinge thực hiện và Olaf Gruss đăng ký 2007). Cây đầu mọc mạnh và cho hai hoa có đường kính 18-20 cm với cánh hoa trên màu vàng có gân màu nâu, cánh hoa ngang màu đỏ nâu và lưỡi hoa vàng nhạt. Cây lai dễ cho hoa khi pha giống L/H rothchildianum với L/H emersonii (L/H Gerd Rollke).

Tóm lại, những mong muốn khi lai giống những cây L/H trên đã thành đạt. Cỡ hoa và cách kết cấu của hoa đang còn tiếp tục được lai giống đặc biệt với những cây thuộc nhóm Brachypetalum và Parvisepalum. Phần lớn những hoa loại này có màu kem nhạt và một vài cây còn thừa hưởng được cả hương thơm.

Cho đến nay đã có 22 cây lai giống được đăng ký trong đó 14 cây lai giống chính và 8 cây lai phụ khác.

The new species of the genus Paphiopedilum from Vietnam and their hybrids

Whenever new species of the genus Paphiopedilum were discovered the hybridizer hope for new interesting hybrids. In the last 20 years some very attractive new species were discovered in Vietnam. This newer history of the genus Paphiopedilum in Vietnam began 1987:

Paphiopedilum henryanum BRAEM 1987
Synonym: Paphiopedilum dollii LUECKEL 1987

The hope was to produce compact growing plants with flowers with big blotches on the dorsal sepal and a intense colored lip.

During the first years only hybrids were registered which were made in the nursery of Hilmar DOLL in Germany, like the crosses with Paph. haynaldianum (Paph. Tigerdolli 1989), with Paph. liemianum (Paph. Limidolli 1989), with Paph. delenatii (Paph. Doll Mouse 1990), with Paph. rothschildianum (Paph. Dolliroth 1992), with Paph. charlesworthii (Paph. Doll’s Kobold) and with Paph. lowii (Paph. Lipstick 1992).

Other hybridizer tried to produce new crosses during the following years, for instance PAPHANATICS made the crosses with Paph. sukhakulii (Paph. Graham Robertson 1992) and with Paph. barbigerum (Paph. Tyke 1995). Altogether 24 primary hybrids and 30 other hybrids were made, including some with complex parents.

The result of the hybridizing efforts over the years fulfilled our hope to produce compact plants. Some of these hybrids show us attractive blotches in the flowers, but only a minority will be maintained in our collections and will be used in further hybridization.

Typical examples for this quality are Paph. Tyke, Paph. Graham Robertson, Paph. Doll’s Kobold, Paph. Wössner Ministar (the cross with Paph. helenae 2001) and perhaps Paph. Wössner Tigerhenry (the cross with Paph. tigrinum 1998). The most interesting hybrids for the future are undoubtably the crosses with closely related species.

Beside these artificial hybrids of Paph. henryanum there also natural hybrids like Paph. x vietenryanum, the cross with Paph. gratrixianum, and Paph. x aspersum, the cross with Paph. barbigerum. The registered cross with Phragmipedium longifolium (Phragmipaphium Charming Daughter 1995) was only a selfing of Phrag. longifolium.

Paphiopedilum tigrinum KOOPOWTZ & HASEGAWA 1990
Synonym: Paphiopedilum markianum FOWLIE 1990

The hope was to produce hybrids with intensely colored flowers with blotches. The results of the hybridization efforts were disappointing. The great hopes could not be realized. The first hybrid, created by Ray Rands, flowered 1994 in the nursery of Norito HASEGAWA and Harold KOOPOWITZ in Los Angeles. This cross with Paph. charlesworthii got the name Paph. Charlie Tiger. The next cross was registered by Franz GLANZ from Germany in 1995 with Paph. concolor as a parent: Paph. Wössner Concotiger, which had good color but bad shape. A total of 14 primary hybrids and 6 other hybrids were registered. Perhaps only Paph. Wössner Tigerhenry, the cross with Paph. henryanum, will be interesting for further hybridization and could be an example for attractive hybrids with the related species.

Paphiopedilum herrmannii FUCHS & REISINGER 1995

The hope is to produce intensely colored, compact growing plants. This species is sometimes seen as a natural hybrid between Paph. hirsutissimum var. esquirolei and Paph. barbigerum or Paph. helenae. But plants from artificial propagation show us a great uniformity in shape and color. Hence its classification as a distinct species is more appropriate.

There are not many plants in culture. The species was not accepted by the Orchid Registrar for some time. These are the reasons why we have no information concerning hybridization. Only one cross was registered; it is Paph. Wössner Minibraun, the cross with Paph. schoseri, registered by Franz Glanz. Another hybrid that is sometimes seen, is the really nice cross with Paph. tonsum var. braemii.

Paphiopedilum helenae AVERYANOV 1996

The hope is to produce intensely yellow colored, compact growing plants. The first hybrid, the cross with Paph. sukhakulii, flowered 1999 in the nursery of Franz GLANZ in Unterwössen. It was named as Paph. Wössner Goldsuk. At the same nursery bloomed in 2000 and 2001 the crosses with Paph. niveum (Paph. Mariechen), with Paph. charlesworthii (Paph. Wössner Helene), with Paph. barbigerum (Paph. Wössner Zwerg), and with Paph. henryanum (Paph. Wössner Ministar). All these crosses grew and flowered easily in a very small pot, ideal for growing on the window sill. The hope that the color will be dominant could was not realized. Only crosses with species with yellow flowers produced hybrids with golden flowers, like the cross with Paph. armeniacum (Paph. Wössner Minigold 2003), with Paph. Golddollar and with Paph. primulinum (Paph. Wössner Mini Goldi 2004).

I will be interesting to see these hybrids used in future crosses with yellow complex hybrids for producing golden tea-cup hybrids. The first examples of this line of hybridzing in Taiwan looks quite interesting. Very interesting are also the first steps in hybrizing with vinicolors. One of these hybrids was labeled as a cross with Paph. dayanum vinicolor. But in fact a hybrid between Paph. Orchard Slope and Paph. dayanum was used for this extraordinary compact growing dark colored hybrid. A total of 10 primary hybrids and 3 other hybrids were registered so far.

Paph. tranlienianum GRUSS & PERNER 1998

The hope is to produce intensely colored, compact growing plants.
The only two hybrids were registered so far were registered by myself: the cross with Paph.helenae as Paph. Vinci and the cross with Paph. barbigerum var. coccineum as Paph. René.

Both plants are compact grower and grow and flower very easy. The flowers have a brownish color and a shape similar to Paph. barbigerum.
I have the hope that in the future this species will produce many compact growing dwarf hybrids designed for window sill growers.

Paphiopedilum coccineum PERNER ET HERRMANN 2000

Only one cross is known at this point, the cross with tranlienianum. This cross, Paph. René, registered as a barbigerum-cross, shows us only that these plants grow very well, flower easily and can have an intensely colored flower. Perhaps other hybrids are culture but are not registered, because the name was not accepted in the registration.

Paphiopedilum vietnamense GRUSS & PERNER 1999
Synonyma: Paphiopedilum hilmari SENGHAS & SCHETTLER 1999
Paphiopedilum mirabile W. CAVESTRO & G. CHIRON 1999.

The hope was to create hybrids with big pink to reddish flowers and good shape that grow and flower very easy. Already the first hybrid showed clearly the potential of this new species. The cross with Paph. delenatii, registered in 2002 by N. POPOW, Germany as Paph. Ho Chi Minh grows very fast and produces wonderful pink to red coloured and excellently shaped flowers. A problem is that this hybrid flowered in some collections only 2-4 weeks, in colder climate 1-2 weeks longer.

The next hybrids were created both in Germany and in Taiwan, like the cross with Paph. malipoense (Paph. Wössner Butterfly by Franz GLANZ 2003), with Paph. bellatulum (Paph. Wössner Vietnam Beauty by Franz GLANZ 2003), with Paph. micranthum (Paph. Wössner Vietnam Love by Franz GLANZ 2003).

The first crosses with a hybrid parent hybrids into flower 2004, the cross with Paph. Transvaal, created by HANDELBAUER in Austria and registered by Franz GLANZ as Paph. Franz Fuchs. In the same year the cross with Paph. Susan Booth follows at the In-Charm-Nursery in Taiwan, registered as Paph. In-Charm Cotton Candy, and also the cross with Paph. S. Gratrix, Paph. In-Charm Jewel.

All these hybrids showed us that the color of Paph. vietnamense is dominant. Also nearly dominant is that the hybrids are growing out of the flasks as seedlings very fast and flower very easy. Very attractive are the hybrids with the species of the section Brachypetalum and Parvisepalum. This shows us Paph. Sakura Pink (with Paph. concolor by AIHARA 2004), Paph. Wössner Vietnam Bell (with Paph. Conco-bellatulum by Franz GLANZ 2004), Paph. Wössner Vietnam Gold (with Paph. armeniacum by Franz GLANZ 2004), Paph. Alfred Tetzlaff (with Paph. godefroyae by PINKEPANK 2005) and Paph. Eddy Wets (with Paph. wenshanense created by René KLINGE and registered by Olaf GRUSS).

Most of these hybrids shows well shaped flowers with reddish spots. Only the cross with Paph. armeniacum shows us again, that this species is dominant. The flower of Paph. Wössner Vietnam Gold is yellowish white without points.

The cross with the closely related Paph. emersonii (Paph. Wössner Vietnam Moon by Franz GLANZ 2004) produced a large flower, not always in the best shape, with a whitish base color and suffused with pink.

The highlight of the hybridizing with Paph. vietnamense was 2005, when in the nursery of Franz GLANZ in Unterwössen the cross with Paph. rothschildianum flowered. This compact growing hybrid produced very intensely colored flowers in a good shape. The charm is similar to that of Paph. Gloria Naugle, but has darker color and better formed flowers.

Very interesting was also the result of the cross with the other extraordinary vietnamense species Paph. hangianum. The cross was created by HANDELBAUER and flowered the first time 2005 in the nursery of Franz GLANZ. He named this new hybrid Paph. Annie Fuchs.

It has big pink-white flowers and considerable fragrancy. The shape is not very good, but perhaps in the future we will see really well formed clones of this extraordinary cross.

A total of 20 hybrids are registered by now, 13 primary hybrids and 7 other hybrids.

Summarizing these observations, it can be said that expectations were not fully realized. While hybrids with the more closely related species of the sections Brachypetalum and Parvisepalum are very attractive, the crosses with multifloral hybrids are less striking.

Particularly intensely colored cultivars of the species appeared after the first wave of hybridizing had passed. This opens the door for additional hybridizing efforts. We will certainly witness many more positive surprises from hybridizing with Paph. vietnamense.

Paphiopedilum hangianum PERNER ET GRUSS 1999
Synonym: Paphiopedilum singchii LIU ET ZHANG 2000

The hope was to create hybrids with very big cream colored and fragrant flowers in a good shape that grow and flower easily.

The hybridzing with this extraordinary species started again in Taiwan and Germany. The first hybrid was the cross with Paph. niveum, Paph. Chou-Yi Yuki created by SHIN-YI and registered by CHING HUA 2004. The hybrid shows a big flower with creamy petals and sepals, brownish red spots at the base, and a white lip. The second hybrid flowered in the nursery of Franz GLANZ, the cross with Paph. Conco-bellatulum, registered as Paph. Wössner Giant. The hybrid impressed with its big yellowish and flower with reddish spots. Both hybrids are fragrant during the day.

A wonderful result is the cross with Paph. delenatii, Paph. In-Charm Handel 2005 created by In-Charm Orchids and registered by Ching Hua. The hybrid has a big white flower with very good shape, suffused with pink and reddish spots at the base.

The cross with Paph. bellatulum followed in the same year, created by HANDELBAUER in Austria and registered by Franz GLANZ as Paph. Karl Ploberger. Very big flower, creamy color with reddish brown spots and good shape.

The hybridization with the species of the section Parvisepalum brought also very interesting hybrids. The cross with Paph. malipoense (registered 2005 as Paph. Shun-Fa Golden by CHING HUA, created by DOU-YA-Orchids) shows a creamy jade-green flower with the typical maroon staminode. The cross with Paph. armeniacum (Paph. Wössner China Moon registered 2005 by Franz GLANZ) developed a wonderful golden yellow flower.

The first shown crosses with the multifloral hybrids did not show extraordinary results. But we must wait for more different clones of this hybridizing line.

Also we must wait for the first crosses with complex hybrids. There is the hope to produce complex hybrids with well shaped flowers and fragrancy.

A very interesting result brougt the cross with Paph. rothschildianum (registered 2007 as Paph. Alexej by Olaf GRUSS, originated by René KLINGE). The first plant developed 2 flowers on a very compact growing plant. The flowers had a diameter of 18 - 20 cm with a dorsal yellow sepal with brownish veins, red-brownish petals and yellowish lip. It flowers much easier than the closely related cross of Paph. rothschildianum with Paph. emersonii (Paph. Gerd Röllke).

Summarizing it can be said that most expectations of this line of hybridizing were realized. Size and presentation of the flower are passed on in particular in crosses with species of the sections Brachypetalum and Parvisepalum. Most of these flowers are faintly cream colored, and some of them inherit the fragrance.

A total of 22 hybrids are registered by now, 14 primary hybrids and 8 other hybrids.
